Fort Worth was hit hard economically during the Civil War period. The population hit its lowest point at 175 citizens. Those who stuck around the city finally saw a revival in the city's economy during the 1870s. Over the next several decades, Fort Worth evolved into a major force in Texas. The Fort Worth area adjusted to the two world wars and the Great Depression similarly to the rest of the nation. One of the most important developments in the city's history didn't occur until the Twentieth Century when oil began to gush in the west part of Texas. Fort Worth made an effort to secure some of the profit for itself and now oil flows directly beneath the city. Due to this and other factors, Fort Worth has been recognized as one of the fastest growing large cities in the U.S.1
Mental Health in Fort Worth
With a population of 5 million people, the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is one of the largest cities in Texas and the nation. Although residents of these cities use drugs at a lower rate than the national average, over 13 percent still use drugs, including prescription pills and marijuana. Over 22 percent of Fort Worth residents engage in binge drinking and 23 percent smoke tobacco.2 Not surprisingly, many Fort Worth citizens struggle with addiction and substance abuse problems. However, there are many public and private mental health agencies ready to assist people on the road to recovery.
The Tarrant County Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness works to provide support services to individuals who live with a mental health issue. The organization offers a number of free support groups for consumers, their families, and other loved ones. Peer-to-peer groups provide a place where those living with mental illness can share their feelings in an understanding and empathic environment, as well as receive encouragement from others who suffer from mental health issues. For family members, the Family-to-Family Group offers a forum to discuss common issues of concern and share strategies for effectively helping loved ones. Educational classes are also offered for care providers to ensure the best care is given to those who need it. Additional information about these programs is available by calling 817-332-6677.3
